Refik Anadol’s groundbreaking approach to AI-based immersive data narratives takes the audience on a mesmerizing journey of light and color in this unique artwork designed specifically for AKBANK’s Headquarters. DATAFALL: AKBANK features a dataset that combines memories of nature and history, including weather data from Istanbul and coral ecosystems. This fusion reflects and represent the natural fabric of Istanbul, surrounded by waters, and the complex rhythms of the urban center. As a dynamic suite of images, the final artwork encourages the audience to reflect on the emerging relationships between aesthetics, nature, and data science. Anadol and his team harnesses a comprehensive dataset and train a unique machine learning model with subsets of the collected data. The artwork brings different aspects of AKBANK’s archives and nature data to life, creating a musing yet provocative experience through a machine’s capacity for visualizing data based on the traces of our collective memories. The fluidity of the visual patterns performs a digital synthesis of this data and represent the many interlocking layers of humanity, nature, aesthetics, and technology in the age of data and machine intelligence.
